Icon design: Fleet management system
Client: Thales Telematics Engineering
French company Telematics asked us to design a set of icons which would represent the various
programmes of which their FMS software suite consists.
A software system for managing company cars and other vehicles, including tracking systems, the FMS suite had been sold
in South Africa, France and China, and needed a revamp of their
generic pre-Windows XP 8-bit icons.
Of course, having an international market involving different cultures
and even alphabets, had certain limitations, such
as the inability to use letters of the Western alphabet in their
icons.
Konrad (who you may now refer to as an icon designer) always wanted
to get his claws on such a project. Icon design is a specialised field and requires experience in "pixel-pushing". And
after this extended project Konrad is experienced, believe it!
We came up with a completely new range of icon

Technical
note:
Microsoft finally caught up with Apple's Macintosh
32-bit interface with the release of Windows XP*.
What this means in practical terms is that Windows icons can now
be transparent, e.g. the shadow areas will let
the desktop picture show through. This means no more jagged edges
and far better colour accuracy.
Next challenge: A range of icons for Mac
OS X. Anyone interested? Let us know :-)
*Although Apple upped the ante with the release of
Mac OS X back in 2000, featuring 48-bit icons with a superb, glassy
look and icons that enlarge and animate. Meanwhile, Windows Vista
– released early 2007 – copied that
same glassy look, albeit in a rather cheesy way.
