Book cover design: "Jedro's Bane"
Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature 2002 (Gold)
Jedro's Bane by Peter Slingsby was
the other gold prize winner in this year's Sanlam competition.
A truly South African story, it revolves around a boy called Jedro,
a San (a.k.a. "Bushman") from the Cape region in
South Africa who is forced to deal with the turmoil of his people's
land being taken by the then British rulers of the Cape Province.
Actually it's a story within a story and parallels are drawn between
a modern teenager's troubles and those of Jedro in a very descriptive
and colourful adventure aimed at teenagers.
The back cover illustration continues the theme of the front, with
a puffadder taken from a scene in the book. The puffadder symbolizes
danger, a challenge, so to speak. Konrad has a love of sunsets and nocturnal scenes — see The
Waterbearer page and click on the magnifying glass.
