In this editorial cartoon of the Felicity Fowl series,
Felicity is seen acting impatient with a construction worker.
The cartoon refers to a manic trend among property developers to
remove residential areas in favour of golf courses
(see "Golf" cartoon),
but in this case the developer has his eyes set on 2010, the year
South Africa hosts the FIFA World Cup Soccer. The caption read, "Brian, I really don't think we'll get permission for a
football stadium here in Clifton!"
Clifton being of course the world-renowned upperclass beach
in Cape Town, where there is no space to develop
anything whatsoever.
In case you wondered, the SAA passenger plane in the background
refers to a previously published cartoon which commented on a certain
property agency's special offer of free frequent flyer miles to anyone buying or selling through them.
The joke is that should one buy a middle class
home, the voyager miles earned would probably get one only as far
as say, Oudtshoorn, home of ostrich farms where you're likely to
find Felicity residing.
